A good teacher is critical to student achievement. So, how does a teacher become impactful and inspiring? Just like the training required for any specialized profession, teachers must train. They must train before they enter the classroom, and they must receive ongoing training even as they work in the classroom. And for that one needs to pick the best college. Sadhana Education Society’s Smt. Kapila Khandvala College fondly referred to in short as ‘KK’ college or ‘KKCE’ is one of the leading teacher education colleges situated in the western suburbs of Mumbai. The history of the college is impressive. Started in 1962 by great philanthropists and educationists such as Shri Jayant Dalal, Shri C.M. Trivedi, Smt. Kapilaben Khandvala the college is guided by the principles of knowledge sharing, shared community spirit, and empowerment of people.

A proud moment for us was when historians Prof Heather Goodall and Dr. Devleena Ghosh of the UTS, University of Sydney come down to Mumbai to research the background and contribution of Smt. Kapilaben Khandvala as an international woman leader and are currently in the midst of writing a book on Kapilaben to be released in 2020. Such illustrious personalities were the pioneer leaders of this institution who believed in the idea that providing good teachers to society is a deep and meaningful engagement. Six decades later, the college stands tall for its commitment to teacher education and is deeply committed to a humanistic approach to teacher education. We strongly believe that educational quality is strongly intertwined with creating opportunities for all students to be themselves, be intrinsically motivated to do well, and not just for the grades.

The institution boasts of highly qualified faculty with Doctorates in Education, visiting foreign scholars, and several value-added courses to enhance teacher preparedness. Critical mentoring and coaching from experienced teachers is the hallmark of the institution. The institution also has state-of-the-art infrastructure, fully air-conditioned smart classrooms, and ICT-enabled labs. A participatory and forward-looking management who believes in innovation, experimentation, research, and technology and is truly people-centered, is our guiding force.

I feel deeply privileged to be a part of such a glorious history and I am proud to be a part of its ongoing endeavor to create and provide quality teacher education that is holistic, humanistic, and self–reflective.
